Conditions this year have been the best almost in living memory – the last snow like this was 35 years ago and the season has not ended yet. Skiing back to resort level is something we have got used to over the years in Family Ski resorts, having chosen them all for their solid snow records as well as family-friendly location and access to facilities, especially lifts and ski schools. However this year the conditions are just amazing and only the very oldest among us have ever seen so much snow. It makes for a very special atmosphere in the villages and of course the skiing is amazing. This season has not just seen a few big snowfalls, although there have been quite a few of those. It has been the continuous top up over the course of the season that has made it such a vintage season. Many of our guests have been lucky enough to receive 10-20cm top-ups during their holiday which makes skiing on piste such a dream and has encouraged many to make some exploratory turns just off the side of the piste whilst seasoned off-piste skiers and boarders have been having a fine time of it. Ski tourers (those crazy people you see plodding or racing in lycra up hills on skis rather than taking lifts) are looking forward to skiing into May and even June, well after the lifts have closed.
With just this week and a further two weeks of the season left, conditions are certain to remain good. The locals are not expecting to see the snow disappear until well into summer and with this much snow down to resort level we can look forward to a fine end to the season. It is at this time of the year as the days lengthen and the sun gets ever stronger that those long terrace lunches after a morning’s fine skiing become very appealing. The secret of skiing in later Spring conditions is to pick your slopes. East facing in the morning to catch the sun and then West and later North as the day wears on to make sure you are skiing on soft but not melted snow. The resort team are well versed at this stage of the season and will be able to point you in the right direction.
For families and children late season can be a very special time. Taking a break in the snow in the sunshine like our young guests here before lunch is a lot more fun when it’s warm. This photo was taken in Ardent at the ski school today 2nd April 2018 – still plenty of snow! Its not too late to enjoy a spot of late season with your family. Flights are still reasonable despite the fantastic conditions and we have a special offer to make it even more appealing – this really is not the season to miss out!
